Cathe Browman Fund for Exploration

cathe browman

Cathe Browman died on July 18, 2008, after a long illness. Cathe loved Haskins and was deeply committed to helping it continue to be the unique, intellectually creative and nourishing place that it is.

One of the most difficult challenges for science in 2008 and beyond is finding financial support for exploratory projects that are not yet mature enough for conventional funding streams. Cathe cared very deeply about finding novel ways of looking at old problems and novel ways of looking at speech. She used to organize viewings of the Haskins X-ray film database (back when it was still film, in fact) in the evening for "the tongue bunch," with popcorn and instructions to people to sit back and not think too hard about what was on the screen, "just observe how the tongue was moving." When she first arrived at Haskins, having no grant funding and only risky ideas, Haskins was able to provide her with some funds, gambling that this would bear fruit. She wanted to make sure this kind of encouragement of new ideas would survive and flourish. The purpose of this fund is to help make this possible.
