The Greenwood Institute of the Greenwood
School in Vermont hosts a resource
site for dyslexia, learning disabilities and literacy. Featured among
these resources is an annotated
bibiography of research on reading acquisition and reading disability
compiled by Dr. Susan Brady of University of Rhode Island, Haskins Laboratories
and the Early Reading Success Initiative. This is an excellent introduction
to scientific research on reading.
The Reading Coherence Initiative
at the Southwest Educational Development
Laboratory has developed and implemented a professional development
initiative focusing on research-based assessment and instruction. There
is an excellent graphic depiction of their Cognitive Foundations
of Learning to Read Framework,
along with accompanying research
evidence. A searchable Assessment
Database catalogs a wealth of tools, and visit the searchable Teaching
Resources Database to find classroom activities to support student
learning. Browse RCI's
topics.
The
Center for Early Reading Achievement
has a newly remodeled site with commentary on a broad range of literacy
topics. CIERA's Technical
Report Series is just one of the many resources available from their
on-line library.
Browse their Links
page and connect to a vast network of resources. Plus much more!
Allow
ample time to visit the International
Reading Association site. The IRA promotes high levesl of literacy
and high-quality reading instruction by holding conferences, publishing
journals (including The
Reading Teacher and Reading
Research Quarterly) and other publications,
and supporting research. The IRA site has an extensive collection of Internet
literacy links, with resources
for parents and teachers, information on adult and family literacy, and
English language learners. Purchase books and other publications
through the IRA bookstore.
Additional
sites supported by the IRA include Readingonline.Org,
an online journal of K-12 practice and research with free printable excerpts
and selections, and Lectura y
Vida, a Spanish Language journal.
The American Federation of Teachers recognizes
the importance of reading and the role of professional knowledge in supporting
the teaching of reading. The AFT site has a section dedicated to reading
with a link to downloadable
resources. Moats' Teaching Reading Is Rocket Science, one of
the articles distributed at the ERS Summer Institute 2000, is one of the
excellent resources available from AFT.
Readingrockets.org is the
on-line branch of a multimedia effort to disseminate research-based information
on promoting reading at home, teaching reading and helping young, struggling
readers.
Many
literacy resources are available from the US
Department of Education. FREE
(Federal Resources for Education Excellence) has a list of language arts
resources that have
been created with federal support. Order
online from EDPubs.
