fMRI is renowned for its excellent spatial precision, but also for its poor temporal precision. In this project printed word stimuli are presented at different short durations, followed by a visual pattern mask. If the mask interferes with processing when it appears, we should be able to see later temporal stages of the word identification system activated only when the mask appears relatively late in the trial (like 200 msec after word onset). Conversely, when the mask appears earlier in the trial (like 25 msec after word onset), we should only see the earliest stages of the system activated.
