Staff Talk:
The Haskins Staff Talk scheduled for Dec. 13 was canceled due to snow. The talk will be rescheduled next year. Staff talks will resume in January 2008.

The Haskins Holiday Party will take place on Thursday, Dec. 20, at 12 noon in the Main Conference Room.

The Seventeenth Annual NEST Meeting was held at Haskins Laboratories on March 17, 2007.

Website Changes:

A new History section has been added.

An Oral History of Haskins Laboratories has been added to the History section.

Board News:
Bruce F. Carmichael, Associate Provost for Science & Technology at Yale University, has joined the Haskins Board of Directors as the new Yale ex officio member.

  New Grants:
March 22, 2007. Sensitivity to visual speech information in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders to be studied in NIH grant (A-142, Julia R. Irwin, PI).

April 6, 2006. Links between production and perception in speech to be studied in NIH grant (A-93, Douglas H. Whalen, PI).

Teacher Quality Grant:
Mastering Reading Instruction

U.S. Department of Education; Susan Brady, PI.
This project will investigate effective strategies for improving the preparation of classroom teachers to teach reading in the first grade.

Adolescent Reading Program:
Behavioral and Neural Effects

NIH/NICHD, Hollis Scarborough, PI.
This project will examine the effectiveness of several research driven methods for improving the reading abilities of struggling adolescent readers.

New Funding Opportunities:
Be sure to check the Grants page to find out about funding opportunities and grants-related information. The NSF has announced the Cyber-Enabled Discovery and Innovation program. The Letter of Intent window is Oct. 30 - Nov. 30, 2007.

People:

Julia Irwin's audio-visual research was featured in the October 2007 issue of Acoustics Today.

Philip Rubin was named as a Fellow of Trumbull College at Yale University on Sep. 20, 2007.

Douglas Whalen, Vice President for Research, is presently on loan to the National Science Foundation where he is a program officer for the Linguistics, Cognitive Neuroscience, and Documenting Endangered Languages programs.
