In attendance: Richard Crane (chair), David Braze, Alice Faber, Steve Frost, Donald Hailey, Douglas Honorof, Anders Löfqvist, Yvonne Manning-Jones, Gerald McRoberts, Philip Rubin, and Christine Shadle.
Laboratories / Sound studios
Doug Honorof reported on ongoing work with the building management to identify sources of low frequency noise (22Hz and below). This involves the scheduling of periods when tenant-owned equipment can be shut down to allow measurements. Doug will also meet with Christine Shadle to discuss low frequency noise and vibration There is also a 60Hz hum in room 177, most likely introduced during post-construction changes; a modest amount of additional wiring is being scheduled, during which that should dealt with. Steve Frost reported detecting noise at 5kHz; he and Doug Honorof will be doing more testing.
Gerald McRoberts reports some 5kHz noise in the Child Language lab area, but not enough to interfere with his work.
A meeting is tentatively scheduled for Sep. 22 with IAC, the sound door contractors, to discuss remaining issues with their portion of the work. In the interim, researchers should discuss with Alice Faber their specific requirements for audio recordings, to see if any of these present a problem that cannot be addressed.
Alice reports that components for the patch panel interconnections between laboratory rooms and their control rooms are almost all in hand; Doug H. and Donald Hailey will meet to discuss plans; Don will verify the layout and proceed with the assembly.
Servers and Databases
- A new computer is being set up to host a new version of FileMaker Pro, that will enable access to databases via a web client, obviating the need for a copy of FileMaker on the desktop for selected database access.
The Mac server is receiving an operating system upgrade; new features will make adding services like shared calendars and weblogging much easier.
Network
- Twenty four additional internal high speed (1Gigabit) ports have been added, which will be useful for videoconferencing and intensive database work.
- A second phase of rack reconfiguration will be scheduled by Don and Richard Crane.
Building issues
- Four new wooden doors will be installed on Monday and Tuesday of next week; one of these will require cutting a new opening, so there will be construction activity in the hallway near the main conference room for most of the week.
- As we gain experience with and knowledge of the systems, the level of air conditioning is approaching acceptable limits in most of the spaces. Please be tolerant, collaborate with your colleagues in your immediate surroundings, and let the technical staff know if there are still problems. Also, as we move into the heating season in a few weeks, there will undoubtedly be more adjustments to be made.
Engineering
- We are acquiring a lectern with integrated audio for the main conference room, to help consolidate and streamline the audiovisual equipment.
- Several people have expressed interest in videoconferencing, and we will be moving forward on that in the next few months. If you are interested in participating in a working group on videoconferencing, please let Richard Crane know.
Other Business
Alice Faber has prepared a handout, posted on the bulletin board next to the server room ( Room 147) and available from her, with cogent suggestions for evaluating your backup needs, and various options on how to proceed.
Members of the technical staff will be reviewing administrative computers and research practices for any additional backup needs or concerns.
A preliminary version of the new website for Haskins is almost ready for release. Carol Fowler needs to edit and approve new text sections.
Staffing needs were discussed. This discussion will be continued with Joe Cardone, CFO, when he returns from the Washington meeting.
When Joe returns, the purchase order procedure will be discussed in greater detail. |
