Julia Irwin's research featured in Acoustics Today

NEW HAVEN, CT—The research of Julia R. Irwin, a scientist at Haskins Laboratories, was featured in the October 2007 issue of Acoustics Today, a publication of the Acoustical Society of America.

The article, "Auditory and Audiovisual Speech Perception in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders" was the cover story of the October issue of Acoustics Today. It describes work in which visual tracking is used during audiovisual speech perception to assess whether "... individuals with autism spectrum disorder show difficulty in extracting phonetic information from the face, or exhibit a more fundamental deficit in the capacity for audiovisual integration."

In the article, Irwin noted that "Results from this area of inquiry will move the field forward significantly by providing basic data to guide focused interventions related to speech perception and processing in the population of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)."
