Abstract An analysis of some articulatory properties of Dutch diphthongs attempts to correlate articulatory inferences based on perceptual & acoustic data with more direct physiological measurements (recording of electromyographic activity) drawn from a single speaker. Evidence is presented to support a distinction between "genuine" & "pseudo" diphthongs. The two classes appear to differ (1) in openness & advancement of their onsets & offsets, (2) in the harmony of tongue position between the beginning & ending configurations, & (3) possibly in the number of articulatory gestures involved.
