Abstract The question of whether velopharyngeal closure in speech is created by the action of the levator palatini muscle alone or in concert with superior constrictor muscles was addressed in a study of 1 speaker of American English producing disyllables containing nasal-oral & oral-nasal consonant oppositions. Nasopharyngeal film was taken along with oscillographic recordings. Results indicate that the levator palatini muscle is "primarily responsible for the medial movement of the lateral pharyngeal wall.”
