| Abstract | To impose some pattern on the vast array of writing systems, present and past, several investigators have proposed typologies of writing (Gelb, 1963; Hill, 1967; Sampson, 1985; DeFrancis, 1989; see DeFrancis for a review). While typology for its own sake may seem a dubious goal, these proposal bring to notice certain interesting questions. |
