Abstract The concept of voice onset time (VOT) is reviewed with attention to recent misunderstandings. Although it was procedurally convenient & linguistically interesting to focus for some time on word-initial stop conss, VOT is properly viewed as a particular manifestation of a more general phenomenon, the timing of the larynx's valvular action relative to supraglottal articulation. This laryngeal timing underlies a complex set of interrelated, perceptually important, acoustic features.
