Abstract Outlines a new approach to speech perception which borrows from ecological perspectives, natural phonology, and phonetic theory. Issues related to cross-modal transfer, sine-wave speech synthesis, developmental aspects of speech and hearing, and the contributions of prosody, syntax, and pragmatics to understanding speech are examined, and prospects for the emergence of a "biology of language" are discussed.
