Abstract [Introduction] My charge for this meeting is to review some facts about speech perception that might seem to be explicable, or not explicable, by reference to a peripheral representation of the speech signal. Since many later speakers will surely report what they think can be explained, I shall confine my remarks to what I think cannot.
