Abstract The possible significant effect of nonlinearities on sound propagation in the vocal tract is considered. The question of whether the physics of air flow in the vocal tract can be characterized by acoustic approximation is addressed. It is shown that the nonlinear effects of air motion cannot be ignored during vowel production. The possibility of a nonlinear exchange of energy from one frequency to another is considered.
