| Abstract | Examined the evidence for syllable-internal structure and for sonority (vowel-likeness) in 2 experiments that employed visually presented stimuli and lexical decision, naming, and reading tasks. In Exp 1, 24 undergraduates responded orally to visually presented stimuli, including both words and nonwords, all of which were monosyllabic and 5 letters long. One group of Ss performed a lexical decision task while a 2nd group named each of the items out loud. In Exp 2, with 36 undergraduates, the responses of 1 group of Ss in a lexical decision task was compared to those of another group whose task was to read the word and nonword stimuli silently. Results provide support for the breakdown of the rime (the vowel and any following consonants) into a peak and a coda and for an effect of the sonority of the postvocalic consonant on that break. This pattern is assumed to be postlexical. Results are discussed in terms of phonological coding in short-term memory. |
