Abstract [Introduction] In this reply, I respond to Clynes’s (1990) criticisms of my earlier work and raise a few questions about composers’ pulses not addressed in this “guidelines.” Although most of his criticisms are justified, they also reveal many unresolved methodological problems and a prominent role of subjective musical judgment in devising perceptual tests of composers’ pulses. This makes the theory very difficult to test.
