Abstract Evidence indicating that gestures are the basic atoms of phonological structure is examined. Proposed is the theory that gestures are prelinguistic discrete units of action that are elements of a phonological system in the course of development. The characteristics of gestures as phonological units within the context of a computational model are examined to illustrate that phonological regularities can be captured by representing constellations of gestures using gestural scores. It is demonstrated how proposed gestural structures relate to proposals of feature geometry.
