| Abstract | Compared the performance of poor and good readers in the 2nd grade (as defined by scores on the Decoding Skills Test and classroom reading level) in comprehending sentences with complex syntactic structures. In Experiment 1, a baseline level of performance of 14 poor readers and 14 good readers in acting out sentences with the temporal terms before and after was obtained. Poor
readers made more errors in acting out sentences than did good readers, but displayed a high overall success rate. In Experiment 2, 14 good readers and 14 poor readers acted out sentences similar to those in Experiment 1, but under conditions requiring differing degrees of processing. The poor readers' high level of performance under conditions of reduced processing demands suggests that their difficulties in understanding spoken language may be due, in large part, to limitations in verbal working memory. |
