Abstract This paper examines the control of bilabial closure and release in stop consonants. Recording of lip kinematics were made in five subject using an electomagnetic transduction technique. Results suggest that the lips are moving at a high velocity at the instant of oral closure. During the closure, the lip tissues are compressed and the lower lip may push the upper lip upwards. The results are compatible with the hypothesis that one target in the production of labial stop consonants is a region of negative lip aperture.
