Abstract Argues that quantal theory (QT) of sound patterns of speech is not coherent as a theory and that QT is flawed by a premature attempt to fit phonetic fact into the framework of distinctive feature theory. It is argued that QT has not gone far enough to permit practical applications in machines for automatic speech recognition and synthesis or phonetic applications in an account of human perception and production.
