Abstract Conducted an experiment with 12 undergraduates to determine whether there is a difference in detectability of structurally similar words and nonwords masked by amplitude-modulated or unmodulated broadband noise. Results show that words and nonwords were equally detectable in noise, even when the noise provided a background of appropriate speech envelope features.
