Abstract Investigated stop consonant release transients (TRs) produced in isolation by a male talker in a quiet whisper in which only the initial TR remained. Spectral analyses showed the isolated TRs to have a clearly defined formant structure, not seen in natural release bursts, whose spectra were dominated by the frication noise. In 2 perceptual experiments with 19 normal-hearing, native English speaking listeners, isolated TRs provided only partial information for consonant identification, as with excerpted natural release bursts.
