| Abstract | P. Keating has argued that the representation of cross-linguistic voicing contrasts for stop consonants must involve purely abstract features that map onto phonetic categories in different ways for different languages. It is argued here that it may not be necessary to eliminate the use of physically based phonological features; rather, more adequate physical descriptors may be needed. A gestural approach is proposed in which, eg, the voicing contrast in French & Eng lishwould be described as the presence or absence of a glottal opening & closing gesture. |
