Abstract The recovery of vocal tract articulation from speech acoustics, the inverse problem, has been a long-standing problem. Many of the chapter in this book are concerned with the forward problem: How do humans move their articulators to produce the sounds heard as speech? The question here is: Can vocal tract articulation be inferred from the speech signal using machines?
