Abstract Investigated the interrelatedness of words and music in song recognition in 3 experiments with 97 undergraduates. 20 pairs of excerpts from unfamiliar folksongs (titles appended) with interchangeable melodies and texts were recorded, and Ss were tested for integration due to semantic connotation, decrement in recognition caused by the wrong words, and decrement caused by the wrong melody. Results show that semantic interaction was not required and that integration of components in song recognition did not depend on the acoustic identity of a reheard song. Results support the notion of an integrated memory representation for melody and text in songs.
