| Abstract | According to the "chirp-identification" hypothesis of H. C. Nusbaum et al (see PA, Vol 71:3083), speech perception does not derive from fusion but from phonetic identification of the chirp without reference to the base. In the present paper, the data of Nusbaum et al supporting this hypothesis and the counterevidence reported by the author et al (see PA, Vol 71:3086) are examined. It is concluded that the hypothesis is not a viable explanation of duplex speech perception |
