Research Goals. The principal goal of this project is to gain a deeper understanding of the etiology of reading disability by following reading development over the course of two years in seven-year-old children of varying reading levels. Previous cross-sectional research has identified reading group differences in both functional neuroanatomical and behavioral trajectories; by using a longitudinal design and linked behavioral testing, neurobiological (functional MRI), neurochemical (MR spectroscopy), and genetic measures at critical stages of reading instruction, the research aims to provide a better understanding of factors responsible for this observed divergence.
Current Status. This research project was funded by NICHD beginning August 1, 2005 for five years. Income to the Laboratories for the third year is $48,307.
